The development could lead to a blood test to help diagnose the ailment. Researchers found that patients had excessive levels of certain immune cells that fight infection. The cause of the syndrome, characterized by fatigue, and joint and muscle aches, remains unknown. In part because so little is known about the disease, some doctors have dismissed it as psychosomatic. >From "Research Notes," a feature of "UC Focus," Published for the faculty and staff of the University of California by the Office of the President, Vol. 5, No. 2, November/December 1990.
