Be very suspicious of what things are "supposed to" do. People with autoimmune disease have a very unusual body chemistry. I've been reading up on antioxidants, which are "supposed to" be the greatest thing since sliced bread -- vitamin C, beta-carotene, zinc... It suddenly hit me that these, plus chemical antioxidants used as food additives (BHA, BHT, etc.) *all* make me sick. The foods that often bother me tend to be things high in vitamin E (corn, celery, ...) Symptoms range from mild burping to major gas attacks and gassy diarrhea. Seems to work ok to restrict my input of antioxidants to small quantities spread out over the whole day, never too much at once. I still persist in believing that it can't really be good to cut out these nutrients completely, but then, I've been brainwashed by traditional and possibly inappropriate theories of nutrition. 8-) --Pat Wilcox (wilcox@cis.ohio-state.edu)
